General
The library is the central institution to provide students and staff members with literature and information.
Extern users are also welcome to use the library without charge.
Registration
To use the library service you need a library user card which you get at the issue desk. You’ll need to show your ID and student ID.
Please report immediately the loss of your library card. The library will not take any responsibility in case of misuse.
To get a new library card there’s a charge of € 5.
Please also report immediately a change of address.
Lending
The media is lent electronically therefore you need your library card.
You can borrow all media except those with red stickers.
The usual loan-period is 28 days which can be extended.
Media with red stickers and magazines can be borrowed only for one day or the weekend and has to be returned by 10 o’clock the next morning (Monday).
Online-Catalogue
The OPAC is a catalogue of all available media.
You’ll find it on http:// webopc.ub.uni-kiel.de.
The OPAC offers various search aspects such as author, title, ISBN, headword etc.
To find the book in the library you need the signature.
If the book is not available you can reserve it online or at the issue desk.
Arrangement
The media is arranged in alphabetical order of the signature. The first three letters characterize the subject area and tell you on which floor you have to look.
In general you’ll find economy and tax on the basement, tourism and law on the ground floor and engineering and mathematic on the first floor.
An overview can always be found on the shelves.
Online Account
To use your online user account you have to log in to the OPAC. The password is the first 3 letters of your surname. Once logged in you can change it.
In your account you can find your address, e-mail, all the media you borrowed and their loan-period.
If your books aren’t reserved you can extend the loan-period up to 4 times yourself. You can also reserve media or cancel reservations. And you can see the amount of the fee you have to pay if you exceeded the return deadline.
Caution: Please check your loan-period regularly!
Distant Borrowing
It is possible to borrow media from other libraries if they’re not available here. You can look for media in the GBV
http:// www.gbv.de
You have to fill in an order form at the issue desk and pay a charge of €1,50 for each medium. So please check in the lending library if your request is available.
Usually you receive your media within 2 to 4 weeks depending on the distance. You’ll get an e-mail once your media arrived.
Reminder
If you exceed the loan-period you’ll be charged automatically for every medium.

2. reminder 2,50€ (in addition to the first reminder)
3. reminder 5,00€ (in addition to the second reminder)
It is only possible to pay cash at the issue desk in the library.
