Heide and Dithmarschen The City of Heide is located in the heart of Dithmarschen, one of Germany's most favourite holiday regions close to the North Sea coast and embedded in a beautiful landscape about 100km north of Hamburg. The town can easily be reached by motorway or by train. Hamburg airport is just one hour of driving away. Heide was first mentioned in 1404 as "Uppe de Heyde" what means "on the heathland". Already since 1447 Heide has been the central location and gathering point of the independent farmers republic of Dithmarschen. Thus, Heide still has got the largest market place of Germany.
