Lernziele / Kompetenzen | On order to correctly understand and create scientific texts, students must be able to identify their research questions, main hypotheses and objectives. Beyond that they should be able to use appropriate scientific working techniques. The course enables the students to read scientific work critically as well as to formulate and layout such texts themselves. Furthermore, students acquire detailed knowledge about the international tourism industry and the multidisciplinary nature of tourism sciences by reflecting on different theories and certain scientific approaches. They will gain an understanding of the general principles and theories of (tourism-) sciences and qualifications for designing and analyzing tourism research projects. This embeds the knowledge of relevant literature, theories, paradigms, and perspectives of tourism sciences and tourism research. At the end of the course students are able to work with scientific texts and know how to practically carry out scientific research themselves. They are able to isolate research questions and issues and to create research questions and hypotheses. Moreover, they recognize scientific misconduct and react to it adequately. |
Inhalt | The course displays, discusses and critically reflects on the different disciplinary perspectives on tourism science as an analytic and awareness-rising mean to understand the tourism phenomena. It is based on a wide understanding of tourism, which relates not only to travelling and staying abroad, but also to the ´touristification´ of daily life. Research goals are global tourism phenomena, which will be analyzed from a multidisciplinary perspective in relation to production, intermediation and effects. The course aims for a systematization and integration of the different perspectives, theories and methods from related disciplines e.g. sociology, psychology, economics, geography, politics, anthropology, and geography into tourism sciences. This includes the analysis and critical reflection on the current state of tourism science, purpose, functions and role of tourism research, and main philosophies, paradigms, methodologies andprocesses of tourism science. In addition, following scientific working techniques are discussed: • The research process • Scientific thinking skills • Scientific writing and citations • The research process • Choice of theme (topic) • Literature research • Scientific writing and citations • Types of scientific work (theoretical, interpretative and analytical writing; research proposal) • Writing a research proposal The lectures will be supported by critical analysis of selected case studies and research papers, exercises, group work and group discussions. |
